"Petty" is a song by the British singer & songwriter Emma Blackery. It is the seventh track from her debut album, Villains.

Background

Emma Blackery makes a musical nod to Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” while discussing the breakup with her first love on “Petty".

Blackery teased the song four days in advance via Instagram saying:

"despite the fact my first love told his friends that i was “the rebound that went wrong” when we broke up, despite him standing there doing nothing when his friends verbally abused me at college, despite him later turning around to my friends at parties introducing himself as my ex-boyfriend when i’d found some success… i laid it all to rest. i forgave him, truly. a few hurtful actions do not define someone’s whole truth. and then i found out last year that he blocked me on instagram. that’s just a step too far, sir."

On the back of the album’s vinyl-artwork, the tracklist has little messages explaining what each song is directed towards. This song is: ‘For The Big Mouth.’

Lyrics

I tried to write a song about you
To take you down
But you know where I am
Is what you hate about me now

I've heard the things you've said
Calling yourself my ex-boyfriend
To anyone who would listen
So what's this about?

Cos you used to call me 'pretty'
Til you took out the 'r'
Said, "Girl you couldn't be more petty
Than you already are"
Are you mad that I wrote songs about you
Breaking my heart
Cos boy you used to call me 'pretty'
Til you took out the 'r'
I'm singing like

Thought we were cool until I saw you
Take me off your phone
It's been so long you've still not moved
Out of your parents' home

Don't wanna see me now
But you're so happy going round
Recalling how we screwed around
Now you're all on your own

Cos you used to call me 'pretty'
Til you took out the 'r'
Said, "Girl you couldn't be more petty
Than you already are"
Are you mad that I wrote songs about you
Breaking my heart
Cos boy you used to call me pretty
Til you took out the 'r'
I'm singing like

I said
Baby, you're welcome
For the press shots
And the parties
That my name will
Get you into
When I play this song about you
And you know that I don't hate you
Though I got reason to
Cos boy I miss your mother's dinners
More than I miss you
I'm singing like
