Dirt is a song by the British singer & songwriter Emma Blackery. It is the second track from her debut album, Villains. It was released on March 16, 2018 and is 3:17 in length. It was released under RWG Records. An official acoustic version of the song was released on April 26 of the same year.
Serving as the first release since Emma’s work was featured at Apple’s iPhone X Reveal, Dirt is an electropop, tropical-house track about Blackery having dirt on an ex-friend who disrespects her online.
Her first release with self-founded RWG Records, the album was released on August 31, 2018.
Emma said this about the song:
"‘Dirt’ was written in August, just after I’d had a massive public online fallout with some people. I was feeling the most frustrated and disillusioned with social media – to the point where I ended up leaving social media and deleting all apps for a few weeks (how wild that in 2018, that’s an eternity online?) I just wanted nothing to do with certain people. Anything I said was deliberately twisted. My name went through the mud privately and publicly. Dirt was the first song I’d written with this new sound – in losing my faith in online friendships, I gained a new perspective on how to present myself going forward. Dirt may be a little hypocritical in that, when you listen to the lyrics, but it was the very start of my journey into becoming happy again – I think it’s only right to share my story from the very beginning."On the back of the vinyl-album artwork, the tracklist has little messages explaining what each song is directed towards. This song is: ‘For the Judas.’
- Emma hasn't made any public statements about the person that she's referring to throughout the song. Some fans suspect that it's about Alex Days, whilst others presumed that it was about her friend Cherry Wallis, however, both of these rumours have been proven false.
- Emma has refused to reveal who the song is about due to the fact that she feels as if it would de-value the song.
- The song was originally going to include guitars during a time where Emma was unsure with what direction to take the song in. The original instrumental is vastly different from that of the final version.
